Spiced Apple Oatmeal Cookies
  1. Heat oven to 350°F and make sure your oven rack is in the center.
  2. In a large bowl, beat 1/2 cup butter, the shortening, 1/2 cup granulated sugar and the brown sugar until thoroughly mixed. Beat in eggs and 1 teaspoon vanilla until well blended. Beat in oats, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cloves, baking soda, and flour. Stir in apples.
  3. On ungreased cookie sheets, drop dough by rounded tablespoonfuls about 2 inches apart.
  4. Bake 13 to 17 minutes or until edges are golden brown and centers are set. Remove from cookie sheets and move to a cooling rack.
Buttercream Frosting
  1. In a large bowl, beat butter, cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla until combined.
  2. Using a knife, apply frosting to cookies after they have cooled.
  3. For decoration, sprinkle some cinnamon over the tops of the frosted cookies.
  4. Enjoy! ^_^
Recipe Notes

I haven’t tried this recipe with applesauce as a substitution for the shortening, but if you are concerned about fat or calories I think that this recipe would be an EXCELLENT candidate for this type of substitution. Also, these cookies are great on their own but they are totally decadent with the buttercream frosting, and the frosting really adds a great contrast against the dark color of the cookie! 🙂
